Metro wristband passes available for Great North Runners

Wristbands are now on sale from nexus.org.uk for those using the Metro to get to the event on Sunday, September 16.

They cost less than the usual tickets and also avoid the need to carry loose change or a paper ticket.

The Metro system will carry 100,000 people on the day, with many of those runners getting to the start line in Newcastle or returning from the finish at South Shields.

Nexus says passengers can make savings if they buy a wristband in advance through its website, and there are a limited number of passes on sale which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The DaySaver wristband costs £4 for adults and £1 for children and allows for unlimited Metro travel on the day of the race.

A weekend adult ticket costs £8 for adults and £2 for children.

The single ticket wristband is £3 for adults and 70p for a child.

Tobyn Hughes, Nexus director of customer services, said: “Runners have previously had the problem of where to put their little cardboard ticket, or loose change needed to pay their fare. The wrist pass makes life easier.

“Runners can just put the wristband on and just forget about. These are available through our website.

“Buying Metro tickets in advance is the best way to speed up travel on the day and this helps runners and spectators alike enjoy the day without worrying where their ticket is.”

Nexus which owns and manages Metro, and train operator DB Regio, mount an operation each year to make sure public transport on the Great North Run day goes smoothly.

This includes putting on about 60 extra Metro trains, additional crossings on the Shields Ferry and support for baggage buses between the start and finish.

Metro staff are on duty to help manage queues at stations and deal with any faults quickly if they arise. For more information, visit www.nexus.org.uk
