Walk To School Month Wristbands

Taylor Wimpey West Scotland donated high-visibility wristbands to children at Balmalloch Primary, St Patrick’s Primary and Kilsyth Primary to help keep them safe on their walk to school.

The donation was made as part of Walk to School Month, which runs throughout October and is designed to encourage children and parents to make walking to school part of their daily routine, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and minimising car journeys.

Taylor Wimpey West Scotland has given the schools over 400 fluorescent wristbands for children in primary 1-3 of each school to make them more visible to drivers on their journey each day.

Audrey Ross, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, said: “Nowadays there is a real concern about the amount of time children spend outside being active and walking to school is an ideal way to help them get more exercise – but it’s important that they can be seen clearly by motorists.

“We hope our high-visibility wristbands will help keep the children safe during the darker winter months.”
For more pictures, see this week’s Cumbernauld News or Kilsyth Chronicle dated Wednesday, November 13.

Safety Winter Awareness Bracelets

A DEVELOPER has teamed up with a town school to keep pupils safe during the winter months.

McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement developer, has donated 250 reflective wristbands to children at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Ombersley Way.

The wristbands are to help raise awareness of road safety and to make pupils more visible to passing motorists during busy rush hour conditions.

Headteacher from St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Miranda Gibbs, said: “We actively encourage our pupils to walk to and from school; it’s a great way to keep healthy and active and reduces road congestion. However, many are now finding themselves doing their journey in the dark, and we’re keen to make sure they stay as visible and safe as possible.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to McCarthy & Stone for the reflective armbands – they’ll definitely help our pupils to stand out.”

Gill Sabin, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy & Stone, added: “We’re committed to supporting the local communities in which we build so it’s a real pleasure to be able to make these donations and hopefully help in some way towards keeping pupils safe on their journeys to and from school.”

McCarthy & Stone is currently inviting over 70s to register their interest in the range of one and two bedroom assisted living apartments at Horton Mill Court in Droitwich Spa.

Be Proud To Wear Organ Donor Wristbands

Could a wristband persuade people to sign up as organ donors? This is what transplant patients and staff at the South West Transplant Centre in Plymouth hope. Surveys show that 90 per cent of people support organ donation, yet only 31 per cent of the population is on the donor register, despite a government initiative in 2006 to increase the number. The UK, with 13 donors per million people, has one of the lowest rates in Europe. In Spain, which has a system of presumed consent (individuals opt out if they don’t want to donate), the figure is 35.

In a report published last week, NHS blood and transplant officials recommended that patients on the donor register be given priority for transplants to encourage people to register. The Welsh Assembly has also voted to introduce a similar system to that in Spain.

Organ Donor Bracelets

However, although Spanish law changed to presumed consent in 1979, it was not until 10 years later that the number of donations markedly increased. This is thought to be because of improvements in the system – in particular the role of donor coordinators trained to approach bereaved families.

Even if the law for the UK changed, there is no evidence that this alone will achieve the dramatically higher donation rates that the Department of Health is hoping to achieve. For that we need to improve public awareness.

This month, at the transplant centre based at Derriford Hospital, former transplant patients and staff have joined forces to launch the “Register and Pass it On” campaign. Some 2,000 blue wristbands are being distributed in Plymouth city centre, with the aim of creating a “viral message” to encourage people to sign up as donors.

One thousand people a year, or three a day, die in the UK because of a shortage of organs for transplant. It takes less than 90 seconds to add your name to the donor register, a gesture that may add many years to the life of someone who is on the waiting list for an organ

This year’s bracelets were designed by Walk Committee member Jodi Dwyer, who was inspired by a design suggested by a member of a local support group for victims of domestic violence. “MAAV’s newest domestic violence awareness bracelet features a beautiful mix of beads in silver and purple, which is the color symbolizing domestic violence awareness,” Dwyer says.

Awareness Bracelets are $20 each, and one hundred percent of the proceeds support MAAV’s services for victims of domestic violence. They can be purchased at Moderno Salon (406 Main St.), Miter Biter Frame Co. (479 Main St.), and Madison Avenue in Melrose (523 Main St.), or by contacting MAAV at 781-662-2010 or info@maav.org. MAAV also will be selling the bracelets at Sally Frank’s Farmers Market on Thursday, Sept. 27.

In addition, MAAV will be raffling off a new iPad and a gift card tree at this year’s walk. The new iPad is Apple’s latest model, featuring a Retina display and a five-megapixel camera. The gift card tree includes more than $240 in gift cards to local and national merchants such as Market Basket, Absolutely Fabulous, D’Amici’s Bakery, and Starbucks.

Tickets for the iPad raffle are available for $20 each, and only 150 tickets will be sold. Tickets for the gift card tree raffle are $5 each, 3 tickets for $10, or 8 for $20. Tickets for both raffles can be purchased at Coffee, Tea, and Me (421 Main Street), at Sally Frank’s Farmers Market on Sept. 27, or by contacting MAAV. Winners will be drawn at MAAV’s Annual Walk Against Violence on Oct. 28. You do not have to be present to win.

MAAV’s 17th Annual Walk Against Violence and Candlelight Vigil will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Melrose Veteran’s Memorial Middle School. Diane Patrick, First Lady of Massachusetts, will attend the vigil, where she will be presented with MAAV’s 2nd Annual “Advocacy in Action Award” for her outstanding leadership and commitment to ending domestic violence. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone will serve as Honorary Chairperson of the event.

The event serves as MAAV’s largest annual fundraiser, and the money raised is used to fund prevention and intervention initiatives throughout the community and in the Melrose Public Schools. MAAV’s programs seek to curb bullying, teen dating abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.
