Munster Wristbands For A Cause

MUNSTER Rugby supporters will be encouraged to show their colors this Friday evening by purchasing a red wristband in aid of Mid West Spina.

One of Munster Rugby’s charity partners for the 2013/2014 season, Mid West Spina Bifida, will be selling red wrist bands, embossed with Munster Rocks at the RaboDirect PRO12 League Game against Connacht in Thomond Park.

Each band costs just €2 with all proceeds going to support vital services for the Mid West Spina Bifida.

Bands will be sold prior to, during, and after the match. Sellers can be identified by their red t-shirts with Munster Rocks! on the front.

“Munster has inspired our wheelchair rugby team, Thomond Park even sponsored our jerseys, and we are honoured to be chosen as one of Munster’s charities of the season and to be affiliated with both Munster Rugby and Thomond Park,” said Lynn Buffington, development director for Mid West Spina Bifida.

The Mid West Spina Bifida Association provides a multitude of services, free of charge, to over 100 families living with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. Spina Bifida is a birth defect usually resulting in paralysis of the legs. Ireland has the highest rate of Spina Bifida in the world. The charity is playing a major role in the development of wheelchair sports, levelling the playing field to give everyone a sporting chance, regardless of their ability. Indeed, Spina Bifida’s wheelchair rugby team is aptly named MunStars

Enda Lynch, commercial and marketing manager said Munster Rugby are “thrilled to play their part in supporting such a great cause”.

Wristbands To Stand Against Badger Kills

WRISTBANDS calling on the Government to stop culling badgers are being sold by a Webheath resident in a bid to spread the message.

Shari Black Velvet, who creates the quarterly Black Velvet magazine, has already sold nearly 100 Stop The Cull bands, with 50p from each going to the Badger Trust.

The campaigner who has avoided meat and milk for more than 20 years said she had been inspired, having previously sold Save A Scream Against All Animal Cruelty wristbands, after joining the national London Against The Cull march earlier this year.

“I’m obviously against the badger cull as it’s cruel and inhumane, plus evidence has shown that killing badgers won’t get rid of TB.

“It is a pointless exercise that won’t cure cows of the disease. Vaccination would be a much better option. I also personally think it’s time farmers progressed. These days you can buy soya, almond, rice and coconut milk - why do farmers need to use and abuse cows for cow’s milk?”

She added huge advances had been made in technology over the past 25 years but dairy farmers were still ‘stuck in the dark ages’.

“Why can’t farmers progress and sell new, healthier, cruelty-free products rather than being so stagnant and stuck in old-fashioned food production methods?

“Farmers wouldn’t have to worry about their profits if they didn’t abuse cows. If they grew soya or rice and made milk that way, they wouldn’t need to worry about TB.”
